Coca amb tonyina or gastronomic ritual of Las Hogeras

we and coca amb tonyina on the Lucentum Plaza

The majority of festivities in Spain are related to some special food. In case of Las Hogeras de San Juan de Alicante is coca amb tonyina. Coca amb tonyina is one of the most representative signs of identity in the cuisine of Alicante. The coca is a delicious and juicy pie that has a rectangular shape, in portions. The main ingredient of coca is the tuna.

  • History

Many of people can ask how did  Coca amb tonyina appear in Alicante. The answer is that we have to think about its filling. The main ingridient is tuna which has a huge relation with Alicante. Alicante  is an area of great tradition of consumption of Red tuna.

  • Our expirience / tourism attraction

Our group ordered it in the local bakery shop. But normally it is a family-made meal. If you have a chance, buy it from the family kitchen!  Why? To enjoy the authentic taste of this pie. Is it expensive? not at all! We bought the whole pie for only 5 euros. So it's a very affordable price.
Another advantage for tourists is that during the festival week it is possible to buy it in big supermarkets such as Mercadona ( but maybe it won’t have the same taste as the one we ate it)
We were eating it in a plaza Lucentum to make the process even more realistic because in the majority of   written guides it said that normally people eat it outside.

It is posible to find some gastronomic guided tours (https://viverando.com). But the problem is that, in fact, before this task only Silvia( she is from Alicante) knew about the existence of this pie. Who did not hear about paella or tortilla? But what about coca amb tonyina. It is true that no one of the visitors heard about coca amb tonyina. So it is right to say that there is no promotion of this heritage as a tourist attraction.

  • Sociocultural point of view

The main sociocultural value is the fact that It is a type of family-cultural heritage, it means that what the local mothers and grandmothers cooks it to their children.
We were eating it in a plaza Lucentum to make the process even more realistic because in the majority of   written guides it said that normally people eat it outside.
From the cultural point of view it is a great experience because it is a step to feel like a local person for a moment.

This food is much more than a dish, it is tradition.
