We say that museums are keepers of our past, but museum that we are going to tell you about is more about creating a future with more understanding, and more culture than you can imagine.
History
Museum of University of Alicante was one of the first museums to be built in an university campus in Spain. It was officially opened in December 1999. This museum is that times real masterpiece due to its architectural design. Museum is designed by Alfredo Paya and built to look like it is floating on the water. The base of it, is made from glass (to look more invisible) and the whole area is surrounded by water. As museum is very close to the highway the aim was to build something a part from the noise and give a different impression. All the surroundings make museum look like an island for it self.
The main aim of MUA is to use the space for fostering and sharing culture. To bring people together to enjoy art, music, theatre, photography, cinema and much more. Every year MUAs collection has over 1,300 contemporary work pieces made by known and local artists. Every season collections are changing, but in each you can find over 20 temporary exhibitions and one permanent. This museum is defenetly functioning as a tool for regional development.
When we visited MUA, the main collection then was "Mulier Mulieris". This collection is dedicated to women, and is exhibited every year on the women day - 8th of March. The fifteen selected exhibitions are not only paintings, some are videos, photography or sculptures. This collection is not only art is self but wants to show the social mandates imposed on women, the struggle of women, sexual liberation, violence against women and much more. Every single chosen piece has its own story to tell! An amazing exhibition - worth seeing!

Museum is free of charge, and has opening hours from Monday - Friday, 08.00 - 21.00. You can also book guided tours and groups, which are also for free. MUA is promoting culture through different kind of workshops and educational meetings. Some of them are local others are worldwide known projects in which you can be a part of! You can also join on family Sundays - there are a lot of educational activities to all family members.
What we found out that unfortunately this information about activities might be hard to find. On web page you can find different types of exhibitions you can see and some events but information is quite difficult to find, especially if you are reading the site in English. Therefore we think that as museum does not get a lot of economical support it could use internet marketing a bit better. Even though some parts are challenging to find, you can easily see functional information.
This is an exceptional place!
We are sure that even those who aren’t in to art would find something to
do and see in this museum!!
